Tina Wells: Social Mob: Trend Du Jour?

This seems like a social step in the wrong direction. Over the last 18 months, we've experienced a social media boom. Many non-profits and government agencies are harnessing the power of these tools most effectively. President Obama practically won the 2008 Presidential Election by leveraging social media (Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, was amongst his senior advisors). Millions of dollars were raised in response to the earthquake in Haiti in a few hours. Young people also used the power of social media to tweet and Facebook their thoughts and feelings about healthcare reform on Sunday. Tina Wells: Social Mob: Trend Du Jour?

What Can Economists Tell Us About Teenage Sexual Mores?

Societies socialize children about many things, including sex. Socialization is costly. It uses scarce resources, such as time and effort. Parents weigh the marginal gains from socialization against its costs. Those at the lower end of the socioeconomic scale indoctrinate their daughters less than others about the perils of premarital sex, because the latter will lose less from an out-of-wedlock birth. Modern contraceptives have profoundly affected the calculus for instilling sexual mores, leading to a de-stigmatization of sex. As contraception has become more effective there is less need for parents, churches and states to inculcate sexual mores. Technology affects culture. Chatroulette provides new social experience

It was my first time, and I will admit I was scared. I really didn't know the guy, and I definitely had no idea what I was doing. But I knew I had to do it eventually, so I might as well get it over with now. That is how I lost my Chatroulette virginity. I was bored over spring break and decided to investigate this whole chatting phenomenon. I knew the basics - you log into a site, you are randomly paired with another webcam anywhere in the world, and the rest is up to fate. Stumble upon a boring person? With the press of a button you are transported across the globe to another chatter. Sketchy, yet oh so intriguing. Flyer News

Parenting as Propaganda

I just got back from the biennial meeting of the Society for Research in Adolescence in Philadelphia. Like most meetings of researchers, this gathering was much like an ant nest. People who hadn’t seen each other would come together in little groups, touch antenna to see where and how the others had been, and move along, sharing their news. It all seemed random and scattered. But, like an ant nest, the researchers were building something much larger than any one individual could see: a scientific understanding of adolescence . I’ve been attending these meetings since the first gathering 27 years ago in Montreal, where just a few of us met in a hotel room and thought maybe there were enough folks studying adolescents to have our own organization, separate from the larger Society for Research in Child Development . We’ve grown. Our current meeting was thousands strong. Parenting as Propaganda | Psychology Today

Fairness is socially-learned, not innate, research suggests

A group of researchers working in 15 different areas across the globe may have answered one of the deeper questions of the human condition -- why are we fair to strangers we'll never see again? What is the difference between social programs and socialized e-mail?

As marketers continue to evolve their social networking strategies, it is important to remember that e-mail remains one of the most cost-effective and, if executed properly, the most beneficial tools within their marketing tool boxes. Marketers can use e-mail to increase the effectiveness of their social channels and as a way to identify their most engaged and vocal customers and recipients. Linda Juang encourages a strong cultural identity

Linda Juang encourages a strong cultural identity | San Francisco Examiner : "What were the results of the study? We found that, in general, ethnic minorities — including Latinos, Asian-Americans and mixed ethnic groups — tend to show strong ethnic identity, more than that of European or white American groups. We also found for white students, if their parents did engage in cultural socialization, they tended to explore their cultural background even in higher levels than in minority families."

Why it doesn't make sense to impress a 3-month-old with your socializing skills

"I started feeling the parenting pressure even before my daughter was born.'So which preschools are you looking at?' a friend asked at a party after commenting on the size of my pregnant belly. 'Preschools?' I said, confused. 'Well, I'm working from home, so we don't need daycare.' 'Daycare?!' she snorted. 'You've got to sign up for that the same day those two little lines show up on the First Response stick. Honey, I'm talking about preschool. I mean, you don't want your kid to end up at the Happy Handz Wee School back behind Wendy's, now do you? Because that's the only place that'll have an opening if you don't get your name on some wait lists.'" Social side of homeschooling a good experience

"Since I began the adventure of homeschooling this year, I would like to help eliminate the stereotype regarding a lack of socialization with home-schooling. My decision to homeschool was supported by all my friends and family, but I would like to explain to the nonhomeschool community what I have learned thus far. Because I have enjoyed homeschooling this year, I also want to be an advocate for the amazing parents who homeschool and have befriended me."
